What treatments are offered by Ewan Macaulay at Veins@VUP?
At Veins@VUP, Ewan Macaulay treats both varicose veins and spider veins with sclerotherapy. This involves injection of the varicose veins. For larger varicose veins this is performed under ultrasound control. For smaller varicose veins (“spider” veins) this is performed under magnification combined with ultrasound guided injection if required. This treatment is performed in the consulting rooms without need for hospitalisation and, for most patients, no “down-time”.

How can I find out more?
Whilst some doctors offering treatment for varicose veins are not Vascular Surgeons and offer “walk in”, Medicare “bulk-billed” initial consultations, Ewan Macaulay is a Specialist and therefore requires a referral from another Doctor.
Both the initial consultation and treatment involve “out of pocket” expenses. If you would like more information on the possible costs please make contact via the details below. If you have significant complications of your varicose veins such as clotting (“phlebitis”), bleeding, skin changes or ulceration, you may be eligible for treatment in the health system at your local hospital without charge; discuss this with your General Practitioner.
Sclerotherapy for varicose veins
As sclerotherapy for varicose veins is an out-patient treatment, Medicare will help with some of the expenses of both the consultation and treatment but private insurance does not help with the expense (except for a contribution for the stocking as an “extra”). For more information on this please read https://www.health.gov.au/health-topics/private-health-insurance/what-private-health-insurance-covers/out-of-pocket-costs.
Private insurance for varicose vein treatment
If you would like to use your private insurance to pay for your varicose vein treatment then Ewan Macaulay can also help with this. In order to use your private insurance, you will need to have a day case procedure in hospital. This will be either laser or radiofrequency ablation of your veins which is then usually followed by some sclerotherapy. This will be explained to you along with detailed costing at your initial consultation.
